Flood Sacks Over 2000 Persons In Nsugbe Community Anambra East Council Area

Over two thousand persons have been displaced by flooding in Nsugbe, Anambra East council area and are facing various challenges including hunger and starvation.

Nsugbe community, a town in Anambra East local Government Area, is situated in an upland, but one out of the ten villages, that make up the community, Abba village situates very close to the Omabala river.

Because of its topography and terrain, people from Nsugbe and neighbouring communities like Anam, Umueri, Igbariam settle as farmers especially where they have farmlands.

They as usual did their farming this year like other years but unfortunately, flooding has submerged their houses, property and farmlands.

Because of the flooding, they have moved into bushes around upland in Abba Village Nsugbe where they made make shift shelters with nylon and dried grasses where they live for now.

When newsmen visited the area, it was a site to behold as the occupants both old and young, men , women and children numbering over two thousand, were scattered across various camps as they call the area, which include, Adachoma, Orient one, Orient two, Orient three, Ituku, Akwulunugwu, Ogbuakpu, Emio and Onuigbo and were looking helpless.

Some of them, including Messrs Nnamdi Okoye, Onyeaka Okuo, Udegbune Udekwe and Sunday Chinwuba who spoke to the journalists said they are exposed to threat of wild animals and expressed worry that they could not go back to farm because all their crops have been destroyed, calling for assistance.

Some indigenes of the community, including Mr Caleb Nwoye and Engineer Chidi Obiudu said they were shocked at the level of devastation caused by the flood even as they lamented the hardship the displaced persons are passing through.
