Half a million people were protesting Tuesday in Paris alone in nationwide rallies and strikes against pension reform backed by French President Emmanuel Macron, the leading CGT union said.

The figure of 500,000 people is higher than that of 400,000 given for Paris by the CGT on the previous day of rallies on January 19. Then, the interior ministry had given a much lower figure of 80,000.

Protestors hold union flags and smoke flares during the demonstration as part of a nationwide day of strikes in Nice, south-eastern France,
