The Transition Committee Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Area, Dr. Anselm Onuorah has appealed to the people of the local government to heed the warning by the Nigeria Metrological Agency that there is possibility of heavy flooding this year and begin to make plans of moving to upland.
Dr. Onuorah who made this appeal while speaking to newsmen in Awka, noted that the appeal became necessary due to the amount of damage and colossal waste last year’s flooding caused Ndi Anambra East, despite huge support from the Anambra state government and other bodies.
Dr. Onuorah made it clear that the State government through the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, is doing everything humanly possible to ensure that all the riverine communities in the state do not suffer like they did in 2022 deluge.
According to him, the local government will continue to synergize with SEMA to train and sensitize the people on what they need to know, as well as the need for early preparations before the flood comes.
He commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his painstaking efforts towards making sure that all mechanisms are in place for the riverine people to have relief in case of any eventuality.
Dr. Onuorah also called on the federal government to find a lasting solution to the problem of flooding in some states in Nigeria including Anambra, as the destruction caused by the flood which has become an annual occurrence is unquantifiable both in financial and material loss .
