The Anambra state government has alerted the people residing in flood prone areas of the state of the impending deluge, owing to official reports by the Cameroon authorities that they would open the floodgates of the Lagdo Dam any moment from now.

A government statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu directs all Ndi-Anambra living in riverine and flood-prone areas to immediately move into the Internally Displaced Peoples’ (IDP) camps provided by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

Recall that the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) had earlier advised the people in mostly affected areas to relocate immediately to these IDP camps especially the older ones and children.

The local governments usually affected are, Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra East and West, Onitsha North and South, Awka North, Idemmili South, Ekwusigo, and Ihiala.

The government statement further says household items should also be properly secured alongside farm produce and livestock.

It warns those living along these areas to act now to avoid massive devastation to their means of livelihood.

According to the Commissioner, this directive to relocate should be strictly adhered to as the state government cannot allow people risk their lives and property by staying put till the floodwaters overrun them.
