Anambra State Chief Judge, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu has released twelve inmates of Onitsha Correctional center.
Among the people who regained their freedom were those awaiting trials, stalled cases as well as inmates with serious health challenges, worthy of note was an inmate who has completed his jail term since March 2023 but was still being incarcerated due to inappropriate filing of suit at the appropriate courts that should handle such cases.
Expressing commitment of the judiciary towards prompt dispensation of justice, the representative of the chief Judge, Justice Joseph Nwaeze, noted that the exercise which was part of his constitutional duties in decongesting the correctional facilities, highlighted the benefits of the jail delivery service.
He charged lawyers to guide their clients properly by ensuring that cases are filed in the appropriate courts so as not to delay justice delivery and commended the authorities of the Onitsha Correctional Center for the orderliness of the exercise.
The Deputy Comptroller of the center, Mr. Michael Anugwa in a remark, underscored the essence of the visit and appreciated the Chief Judge and the Minister of Interior for granting amnesty to the inmates.
Identifying frequent jail delivery as a measure in decongesting the facilities, Mr. Anugwa observed that innovations have been mapped out to sanitize the system.
