Buhari condoles victims of Lagos building collapse

Six persons have been recovered dead from the three-storey building that collapsed Sunday night at Ebute Meta, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said on Monday morning.It said the deceased,including a bread seller, her adult foster son, David, an elderly woman, Iya Tahin with her son, Tahin, an aged man with hearing impairment as well as another woman were recovered between 2am and 7:15am. The caretaker of the collapsed three-storey building when contacted said he gave the occupants quit notice when he discovered the visible stress on it.

The caretaker, who declined to say his name, told emergency responders and journalists on Monday that he was living in the building with other occupants when he noticed signs of distress. He said the occupants refused to comply with the quit notice.

According to NEMA’s acting Southwest Coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, the bread seller was praying Salat, an Islamic prayer, when the building collapsed.

Farinloye said search and rescue operations were still ongoing at the scene.

MEANWHILE, Buhari condoles victims of Lagos building collapse.

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with families of those who died, sustained injuries, and were affected in the building collapse at Ebute Metta area of Lagos State.

A statement by his spokesperson, Femi Adesina, on Monday in Abuja, said the incident pained the president, with search and rescue still ongoing at the site.

Mr Buhari saluted the courage and determination of the first responders, national and sub-national emergency agencies in Lagos State, and compassionate Nigerians.

He noted that their immediate actions following the collapse of the three-storey building led to the rescue of several persons, including many children.

The president regrettably noted that the frequency of building collapses in the country has become increasingly embarrassing.

He, therefore, urged the relevant state authorities to work closely with professional bodies to stop the incidents.

Mr Buhari wished those injured a speedy recovery and prayed for divine assistance in the ongoing search and rescue operations. (NAN) In another devpt.a three-storey building located about 200 metres from the collapsed one has been sealed off by emergency workers and its occupants evacuated.

The sealing of the building said to be on 100 Lagos Street, followed obvious distress signs noticed by rescuers.Part of it were said to be already throwing pebbles and falling off.
