Civil Servants Begs Anambra Govt To Regulate House Rent, Provide Affordable Housing Scheme

Some civil servants’ resident in Awka have appealed to the Anambra State Government to regulate house rent in the capital city and provide an affordable housing scheme for low income earners to alleviate their sufferings.

living in a satisfactory and affordable house has become a source of worry to many, especially the civil servants residing in Awka.

Investigation showed that a few years ago, a good two bedroom apartment in the area was going for two hundred thousand naira or at maximum, two hundred and fifty thousand naira, but today, the same apartment is going for between four hundred and fifty to five hundred thousand naira, while three bedroom apartment is above five hundred thousand naira.

Commenting on the ugly development, a staff of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr. Chinedu Uyalor lamented that the current hike in house rent in Awka is beyond the reach of most civil servants as it takes almost their annual income and urged the State House of Assembly to enact a law that will regulate house rent in the state.

She appealed to the state government to provide an affordable housing scheme for an average civil servant, as it will be of help to them, considering the high cost of things in the country.

When contacted, the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development in Anambra State, Honourable Pauli Onyeka urged Ndi Anambra, particularly civil servants to exercise patience as plans are underway by the state government to build over two thousand affordable housing units at Isiagu, Awka South Local government area for low income earners to give them a sense of belonging.

The Commissioner maintained that the Soludo administration is committed to building a livable and prosperous mega city for Ndi Anambra and will construct a more affordable housing estate of international standard to meet the housing needs of the people.
