Some residents of Awka have expressed dissatisfaction with the presidential election conducted last Saturday by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Commenting on the exercise, a one-time Commissioner for Lands in Anambra State, Barrister John Okoli-Akirika, disclosed that section sixty sub section five of the 2022 Electoral Act stipulates that INEC shall upon completion of election in every polling unit transmit the result of the election online to their portal.
He observed that the electoral umpire flouted the law by failing to upload the result of the presidential election in their server but only uploaded results of the national assembly elections. The legal practitioner noted that INEC disappointed many Nigerians, who turned out in their numbers to vote for candidates of their choice by releasing results that did not reflect the people’s wish.
He called on INEC to cancel the presidential election outrightly in accordance with the law or announce the presidential result in their server to redeem their image. On his part, Mr. Bona Elozonachukwu, said INEC conducted the worst presidential election last Saturday since Nigeria returned to democracy as it was marred with irregularities.
He maintained that the ugly development has compelled the electorate to lose confidence in the election umpire and could discourage them from participating in future elections.
