Today is World Press Freedom Day also known as World Press Day.

World Press Freedom Day was announced in December 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly to spread awareness about the importance of freedom of the press in functioning, providing information and re-awakening the government on its duty to uphold and respect the right to freedom of expression.

2022 World Press Freedom Day, which has its theme as “Journalism under digital siege,” also pays tribute to journalists, who have lost their lives.

Speaking on the day, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Chapter, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, appealed to government at all levels to assist journalists in serving the society better by availing them the opportunity to access information.

Dr Odogwu, who decried the level of insecurity bedeviling the Nigeria Nation, called for maximum protection of journalists, especially now, during and after the 2023 general elections.

The Anambra State NUJ Boss While encouraging members to be security conscious in the discharge of their duties, Dr Odogwu advised them to avoid sensational reporting, favouritism and unbalanced reporting, and to be alive today to report tomorrow.
